Material Specifications

Kevlar® Developed by DuPont

Kevlar® brand fibre is an innovative technology from DuPont that combines high strength with light weight to help dramatically improve the performance of a variety of consumer and industrial products. Groundbreaking research by DuPont scientists in the field of liquid crystalline polymer solutions in 1965 formed the basis for the commercial preparation of the Kevlar® aramid fibre. Lightweight and flexible, Kevlar® has evolved over four decades of innovation to do everything from helping save thousands of lives around the world to helping make safer homes and vehicles to helping land spacecraft on Mars. If it needs to be light, strong, or safe, it needs to be Kevlar®. Fibres of Kevlar® consist of long molecular chains produced from poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide. The chains are highly oriented with strong interchain bonding, which results in a unique combination of properties.

Spectra® fibre Developed by Honeywell

Spectra® fibre is one of the world's strongest and lightest fibres. A bright white polyethylene, it is, pound-for-pound, fifteen times stronger than steel, more durable than polyester and has a specific strength that is 40 percent greater than aramid fibre. Spectra® fibre a polyethylene fibre that is produced using a patented gel-spinning process. Polyethylene is a remarkably durable plastic, and scientists at Honeywell have captured the tremendous natural strength in the molecular backbone of this everyday plastic to create one of the world's strongest and lightest fibres. The gel-spinning process and subsequent drawing steps allow Spectra® fibre to have a much higher melting temperature (150°C or 300°F) than standard polyethylene. Used in numerous high-performance applications, including Storm protection panels, police and military ballistic-resistant vests, helmets and armoured vehicles, as well as sailcloth, fishing lines, marine cordage, lifting slings, and cut-resistant gloves and apparel.
